SLEEP DENTISTRY/ SEDATION DENTISTRY

This uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. Sometimes, it’s referred as “sleep dentistry” though a misnomer, patients are usually awake except for those performed under general anaesthesia. Based on the patient’s degree of consciousness, it can be mild, moderate (“Conscious sedation”), deep sedation and general anaesthesia.

  • Low pain threshold patients

  • Patients’ who can’t sit still in dental chair

  • Patients with bad gag reflex

  • When large amount of dental work need to be accomplished

  • Patients with highly sensitive teeth
HOW SAFE IS SEDATION DENTISTRY??

There is always a risk involved in getting anaesthesia. The dentist must be well informed by patient about his/her personal medical status. Patients who are obese or with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) need to have a physician consent before undergoing the procedure and constant supervision during procedure by anaesthesiologist and dentist.
